Actress Anne Heche was left severely burned after her car was engulfed in flames following a single-car crash in Los Angeles Friday.
Heche, 53, was driving her Mini Cooper through a Mar Vista apartment complex around noon when she crashed into a garage, TMZ reported.
Bystanders tried to help the “Donnie Brasco” actress out of the vehicle, but she backed up, drove off and drove into a home, igniting a serious fire, the outlet said.
Heche was pulled from the wreckage by first responders wearing charred clothes and apparently tried to wiggle out of her gurney, according to aerial footage obtained by the site.
She was hooked up to breathing machines and in critical condition at a hospital, but was “expected to live,” TMZ reported.
Home security footage obtained by a local CBS station showed her blue car recklessly speeding through a suburban-style community before the crash.
The mangled vehicle was barely recognizable afterward, footage of the burnt-out debris-strewn car being towed from the accident scene posted by KCBS-TV showed.
Heche’s grave condition prevented officials from testing her for alcohol, according to the report.
The actress has spoken publicly about her troubles with substance abuse.
“I drank. I smoked. I did drugs. I had sex with people. I did anything I could to get the shame out of my life,” she told ABC News
The actress, who dated Ellen DeGeneres in the ’90s before marrying cameraman Coleman Laffoon and dating actor James Tupper, said she turned to booze and drugs to deal with the trauma of being sexually abused by her father.
Heche has two children, one with Laffoon and one with Tupper.
