Charlotte Flair Beats Rhea Ripley In An Unpopular Decision: WWE WrestleMania 36

Charlotte Flair defeated Rhea Ripley for the NXT Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 36.

The bout opened the second night of WrestleMania 36 with both women going approximately 30 minutes. After a hard-hitting fight, Charlotte would eventually get Rhea to tap out after hitting her Figure Eight submission.

Flair is now NXT Women’s Champion once again turning the black and gold brand, and its women’s division, on its head.

Charlotte won the NXT Women’s Championship back in May 2014 after inaugural champion Paige vacated the title after winning the WWE Divas Championship from AJ Lee.

Flair would hold onto the NXT Women’s Championship for 258 days before losing to Sasha Banks in 2015. Charlotte also becomes the second two-time NXT Women’s Champion, the first being Shayna Baszler who lost to Becky Lynch on the first night of WrestleMania.

The Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley match was set up after Flair won the 2020 Women’s Royal Rumble. After eliminating Shayna Baszler to earn a title shot of her choosing, Flair would stay mum about her decision. She already faced – and defeated – both RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch and SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley.

This would bring out NXT Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley on Monday Night RAW to coerce Charlotte to choose her as she hasn’t beaten her. Ripley, on the other hand, does have a pinfall victory over Charlotte on the road to Survivor Series last November.

Ripley pinned Charlotte in a triple threat match that also included Sasha Banks on an episode of Friday Night SmackDown.

With the challenge thrown, Charlotte continued to refuse to accept or state her intentions until she appeared at NXT Takeover: Portland. After Ripley defeated Bianca Belair, Charlotte attacked the champion and accepted her challenge.

In the weeks leading up to WrestleMania 36, Charlotte would show up at NXT to take it to Rhea on a number of occassions.

Rhea won the NXT Women’s Championship at the end of 2019 from Shayna Baszler, who was the longest-reigning champion in the brand’s history. She would successfully anchor the NXT Women’s Division for months

As for what’s next for both women. This week’s NXT will have a Ladder match to determine the number one contender for the NXT Women’s Championship. The field includes: Mia Yim, Candice LeRae, Io Shirai, Tegan Nox, Dakota Kai, and Chelsea Green.
