Disney streaming exec Kevin Mayer becomes TikTok’s new CEO – News Brig

n

Kevin Mayer, mind of The Walt Disney Company’s direct-to-consumer and global company, is exiting to become CEO of TikTok, in addition to COO of the favorite video program’s parent firm ByteDance.

n

Founder Yiming Zhang will continue to function as ByteDance CEO, whereas TikTok President Alex Zhu (previously the co-founder of this predecessor app Musical.ly) becomes ByteDance’s vice president of product and plan.

n

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to join the amazing team at ByteDance,” Mayer said in a statement. “Like everyone else, I’ve been impressed watching the company build something incredibly rare in TikTok – a creative, positive online global community – and I’m excited to help lead the next phase of ByteDance’s journey as the company continues to expand its breadth of products across every region of the world.”

n

The information was reported by The New York Times and then confirmed in statements from ByteDance and Disney.

n

Mayer’s role entailed overseeing Disney’s streaming strategy, including the launching of Disney + final fall, that has grown to greater than 50 million readers. He was also regarded as a possible successor to Disney CEO Bob Iger; rather, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Bob Chapek were naming CEO at a sudden statement in February.

n

Mayer was probably an attractive option to direct TikTok not simply because of his streaming victory, but also because hiring a high-profile American executive might help divert politicians’ safety concerns regarding the program’s Chinese possession.

n

Over in Disney, Rebecca Campbell (most recently president Disneyland Resort, who worked to the Disney + launching as the organization’s president Europe, Middle East and Africa) is carrying over Mayer’s function, whereas Josh D’Amaro is carrying on Chapek’s old job as chairman of Disney parks, adventures and products.

n

In a statement, Chapek stated:

n

As we seem to cultivate our direct-to-consumer company and continue to expand into new markets, I could think of nobody better suited to lead this endeavor compared to Rebecca. She is a highly talented and committed leader with a wealth of expertise in media, surgeries and global businesses. She played a crucial role in the launching of Disney + internationally while overseeing the EMEA area, along with also her strong business acumen and creative vision will be valuable in choosing our powerful and well-established streaming solutions into the near future.
