Jimmy Garoppolo is taking the 49ers’ Trey Lance draft drama pretty well

Jimmy Garoppolo is handling his now precarious situation better than most would.

He’s not resentful of the 49ers for drafting Trey Lance. He credited general manager John Lynch for being up front with him. And he’s excited to have the chance to remain the starter in San Francisco.

“Once they said you’ll have the opportunity to start this year and fight it out, I was all for it,” he said on CBS Radio in his first public comments since Lance was taken third overall by the 49ers on Thursday night. “I’m ready for the competition and that’s what we’re here for.”

When asked about the fact he led the 49ers to the Super Bowl just two years ago and now has to fight for a starting job, Garoppolo dismissed any bitterness he is feeling.

“My dad is an electrician, grew up in a blue-collar household — it’s just one of those things you have to roll with the punches,” he said. “Whatever opportunity presents itself you have to be ready to take advantage of it.

“That is what I have done my entire career and that is what I am going to keep doing. Like my dad said, ‘nothing is going to be handed to me.’ Nothing is going to be handed to anyone in this league. You have to go in there and work.”

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan made headlines prior to the draft when asked if Garoppolo would still be with the team after it, saying he couldn’t guarantee anyone would be alive by then. Garoppolo gave him a pass.

“I know Kyle pretty well, and I knew what he was trying to say when he said that,” he said. “I don’t know if he worded it the right way, but I definitely knew what he was trying to say.”
