Long Island Rep. Lee Zeldin announces run for NY governor

Long Island Rep. Lee Zeldin announced his candidacy for governor of New York on Thursday with the message: “Cuomo’s gotta go!”

Zeldin, 41, is the first GOP contender to officially challenge three-term Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2022.

“I’ll bring the kind of relentless, fighting spirit towards helping to save our state that Cuomo reserves for multi-million dollar self-congratulatory book deals, cover-ups, abuse & self-dealing,” the congressman tweeted.

The Long Island-born dad of twin daughters is an Iraq veteran, having spent four years on active duty with the Army, according to his biography. He was first elected to represent the state’s 1st Congressional District in 2014.

“We are going to win this race,” Zeldin said Thursday on Fox & Friends. “I’m all in. We are all in.”

In a series of tweets announcing his candidacy, Zeldin slammed New York’s “1-party Dem rule in NYC & Albany” saying “the light that was a beacon of what America can be has gone dark.”

“The NY once a magnet for the world’s best & brightest is now forcing its own to leave under the weight of crushing taxes, lost jobs, suffocating regulations, & rising crime,” he wrote.

He then panned Cuomo for his “deadly nursing home order & cover-up.”

“Cuomo has abused the power & trust granted to him & it’s time for him to immediately exit stage left,” Zeldin tweeted. “I’m ready to go all in on this mission and bring New York back from the brink and return it to glory. For many, this feels like a last stand to save our state.”

Last month, the Republican revealed he was mulling a bid for governor in light of Cuomo’s dueling nursing home and sexual misconduct scandals.

Insiders told The Post that the GOP, including Republican Party Chairman Nick Langworthy, were trying to convince Zeldin to take on Cuomo.

Zeldin’s announcement comes a day after Andrew Giuliani — the 35-year-old son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani — said he was eyeing a run for governor on the Republican ticket.

Andrew Giuliani recently worked as a director of the Office of Public Liaison for the Trump administration.
