The mummified corpse of the leader of the “Love has Won” cult was found enshrined with Christmas lights in a Colorado home, authorities said.
Amy Carlson, 45, who was known as “Mother God” by her followers, was found dead wrapped in a sleeping bag in the rural town of Moffat on Wednesday, according to arrest affidavits.
A follower told authorities that he had taken in a group of people who needed a place to stay, and later discovered the body upon returning home from a trip to Denver.
He added that he believed the group had transported Carlson’s body from California to his home.
The Saguache County coroner’s office has not released the cause or manner of the death.
Authorities said the “mummified remains appeared to be set up in some type of shrine” and the body was decorated with Christmas lights.
The corpse also had “what appears to be glitter type makeup on around the eyes,” authorities said.
Two children — a 13-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy — were in the home at the time.
Seven people were arrested on charges for abuse of a corpse and child abuse.
They were identified as Jason Castillo, Ryan Kramer, John Robertson, Karin Raymond, Christopher Royer, Sarah Rudolph and Ma Obdulia Franco-Gonzalez, Guru Mag reported.
While being interviewed by authorities, the group would not use the word “deceased” to refer to Carlson, only stating that she was “out of communication,” the Daily Beast reported.
The seven are members of the spiritual group, which authorities and ex-members have described as a cult, the outlets reported.
Local authorities said they have received “many complaints” from families across the country saying “Love Has Won” is brainwashing people and stealing their money.
Calson — who is the group’s self-proclaimed “divine being” — said on its website that she was on the “534th reincarnation in my quest to recover my beloved Planet, the Center of the Universe, and the first Planet I created.”
Followers believed that Harper cure illnesses and will one day shepherd them into a new mystical fifth dimension, the Daily Beast reported.
Harper’s sister, Chelsea Ann Reninger, confirmed her death in a Facebook post that referenced the “manipulating cult.”
“For those of you that knew my sister Amy, I wanted to let you know we found out yesterday of her passing! Please pray for us and the people involved in this awful situation. We are choosing to remember who she was when she was in our lives on a regular basis and not who she became from this manipulating cult!” she wrote.
