Rays' Randy Arozarena detained after domestic incident in Mexico

The breakout star of the MLB postseason is in trouble with the law.

Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena was detained in Mexico over a domestic dispute in which he allegedly assaulted his former father-in-law and attempted to leave with his daughter without permission from the child’s mother, his ex-wife.

“The only thing I know is he was hyper-sensitive about making sure that the child’s needs were being taken care of,” Arozarena’s agent Abel Guerra told the Tampa Bay Times. “He was always sending money down there, and he was very involved in her life. I don’t want to speculate about (anything else).”

ESPN confirmed the report by Mexican newspaper Yucatán Ahora and said MLB is looking into the matter. Since the incident is family-related, discipline would fall under MLB’s domestic violence policy.

The Rays have yet to publicly comment on the situation.

A video of the incident was released in which a crowd congregated and a police officer was present. Arozarena is heard speaking in Spanish, saying, “Why can’t I be with my daughter, I’m the one that gives her everything?”

The 25-year-old Arozarena became a huge postseason star, hitting .377 with 10 homers and 14 RBIs in 20 playoff games for the Rays. He was named the MVP of the ALCS.
