Tropical Storm Beta threatens Texas and Louisiana coastlines

Tropical Storm Beta is threatening to bring heavy rainfall and coastal flooding to Texas and Louisiana into next week.

A new storm surge warning was issued Saturday for a large stretch of the Texas coast.

Houston-area officials issued voluntary evacuation warnings and disaster declarations as Beta continued to brew in the Gulf of Mexico.

Beta is the 10th Atlantic storm to form so far this month, the most on record for any September, according to Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach.

September is typically the most active month of the hurricane season.

The mayor of Port Aransas, Texas, issued a disaster declaration to close beaches at 8 pm. Saturday as the city braced for Beta. They mayor earlier prohibited overnight camping on beaches.
